4 Myths about Sleep Apnea Busted!

For a healthy lifestyle, it is important to have a good night’s sleep. But many people are now suffering from sleep apnea. While you may be out researching its causes and treatments, you will certainly face some myths on the way. Know that myths have no place when it comes to treatment or the disorder itself. Here are a few of them debunked by Western Slope Sleep Center below.

  1. It is caused by obesity

Being obese or overweight may pose as a risk for developing sleep apnea but there are many other causes too like diabetes or other comorbidities. Being obese or overweight creates a fatty tissue around the throat that can collapse and block the airway as the muscles are relaxing while you are sleeping. But a healthy athlete who has a muscular neck may be facing the same problem, the same goes for a thin person suffering from sleep apnea as they may have a narrowed airway or some abnormalities in their jaw, tonsils, tongue etc.

  1. Snoring means you have sleep apnea

Snoring and sleep apnea are linked but not a mere diagnosis. As a matter of fact, one in every 5 women suffer from some sleep apnea that gives rise to this very myth. It is also associated with other health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, heart failure, obesity, and hypertension. So no matter what causes you to snore, know that something may not be right.

  1. The more you sleep, the better you’d feel

Have you ever slept for longer hours just to wake up tired? You may feel that you may wake up refreshed by oversleeping, but it turns out to be opposite. Experts suggest to sleep only 7 to 9 hours every night. Oversleeping can cause a lot of medical problems like diabetes and heart disease. Always get a healthy balance of sleep. Oversleeping is not the best problem to cure sleep issues.

  1. Wearing a CPAP mask at night is ugly

If you are suffering from sleep apnea, there are many solutions. The most common one is the Continuous Positive Airway Pressure or CPAP therapy. You can also go for a trial treatment to check if it suits you and seek a mask that is comfortable for you. When it comes to attractiveness, know that getting CPAP therapy on a regular basis can reduce the signs of aging and make you look younger than ever.
